New Zealand and the UK have historical trade links. As such, many UK businesses detailed here have considered New Zealand based customers and have provided reasonable shipping charges and favourable return policies. A number of merchants offer the option to pay with NZ$ by default.

When shopping online from New Zealand, customers generally should NOT be charged Value Added Tax in the UK (called GST here) as you are outside the EU. This is 20% at the time of writing (May 2019).  Each merchant’s website handles things a little differently however when it comes to taxes. If you are shopping and paying in New Zealand Dollars, the store will generally adapt their website’s cart settings based on your selected country. When buying in other currencies such as Pounds you need to ensure that VAT has not been added to your order at time of purchase. It may be because you do not have all cookies enabled so the merchant’s website doesn’t know where you are. Alternatively contact the Merchant for clarification before completing your purchase.

When shopping overseas buyers from New Zealand may be subject to import duties and taxes for their online purchases, these are calculated by New Zealand Customs when your item arrives in the country. Before buying, it is advised that you utilise the free online duty estimator provided by the government in the link below, to save getting a nasty shock later on (current order value threshold is approximately NZ$1000)!

If the amount to be paid to Customs is under NZ$60, this will be waived, but if it’s $60 or more, you’ll have to pay duty and GST plus an import entry transaction fee and MPI levy. This calculation is an estimation only and applies to goods imported for personal use. For more information visit What’s My Duty Estimator from customs.govt.nz.

Any additional charges for customs clearance must be covered by you on arrival in New Zealand; generally the merchants have no control over these charges and can’t predict what they may be. Some sites however do have a duty calculator built into their website at checkout.

Duty is charged per delivery, so consider not buying many things all at once.

Duty is calculated on the item/s cost plus shipping cost. It is therefore advisable to select standard Royal Mail shipping as an option at checkout where possible. Royal Mail usually arrives from the UK the following week after dispatch and is affordable and reliable.

Rates vary and they may well change from when this was written (May 2019). Do check by following the links above before buying. However currently if you buy a little under £100 or equivalent  NZ$225 worth of items plus standard postage; custom charges are waived.

Clothing allowances in NZ are quite low before duty is charged. Many other items have a higher threshold. Use the estimator linked above to determine what the implications are for your prospective purchase.

For correct size selection, please use the individual website size guides for measurement and fitting details. We have also provided a summary guide for clothing and shoes – see General Size Guide

The delivery time-frames vary based on the delivery method that the online store has provided or that you have selected during checkout. Shipping times and cost are summarised on our quick shopping guide for each listing, however these are also specified on the relevant online store’s delivery policy pages and will be confirmed during checkout. We suggest you double check these. Some online stores offer express and standard tracked shipping options that will allow you to track the delivery.

Many UK merchants offer pricing and payment options in New Zealand Dollars. Some set this automatically when visiting their site by using geo-location cookies on your browser. With other sites you may be prompted and will need to set your preferred delivery location and currency manually.
Other sites only offer Great British Pounds (GBP) as the payment currency, or are set to this by default and allow you to manually change to another currency of your choice. This is usually on the top nav bar of the website.

When shopping in a foreign currency with your credit or debit card, the applicable rates and fees will depend on your bank. This will be detailed on your bank’s website.

To make it easy for you we have grouped merchants accordingly – filter by Payment Currency.
Check out the Quick Shopping Guide section for the merchant concerned to see their available options. Once you have decided or accepted which currency you wish to shop in, it may be useful to use your bank’s currency conversion tool.

UK customer service standards are generally high and if you have any questions or have a problem with a purchase, do not hesitate to contact them.

Bear in mind however that UK businesses are in a different time zone. Most customer services are open during business hours GMT. This also means that emails might take a while to be answered.

The UK varies between 11 and 13 hours behind us here in New Zealand (depending on summer daylight savings).  You are therefore better to contact UK later in the evening from NZ.
